Dr. Vishu Tantia, Head of the Psychiatry Department at Dr. S.S. Tantia Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre (Jan Sewa Hospital), and Senior Psychiatrist Dr. Ankush Sharma presided over the annual conference of the Central Psychiatric Society.
The conference, organized by the Agra Psychiatric Society on behalf of the Central Zone of the Indian Psychiatric Society, was held at a hotel in Mathura-Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh. Themed "Cultural and Spiritual Factors in Suicide Prevention," the event was titled SIPCON.
While addressing the conference, Dr. Vishu Tantia emphasized that doctors primarily provide medication, but a patient's recovery is also significantly influenced by their cultural, religious, and social beliefs. He stated that if individuals focus on such beliefs from an early stage, the tendency toward suicide can decrease. Furthermore, belief in reincarnation can also act as a deterrent, as it encourages individuals to reconsider such extreme steps.
Dr. Ankush Sharma added that while medical science provides treatment for mental illness, suicidal thoughts are often rooted in psychological depression. Faith in religious beliefs can help reduce suicide cases. He noted a rise in student suicides in coaching institutes across some districts in recent times. As a preventive step, many of these institutes are now introducing spiritual and cultural teachings alongside academics to reduce such tendencies among students.
